Sleep Apnea.

Sleep apnea is a disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts, resulting in poor sleep quality. Globally, 1/7 people have either obstructive or central sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is when the muscles in the throat relaxes, blocking the airway. Central sleep apnea (CSA) is when the brain does not send proper signals to the muscles to breathe.

Interview Highlights.

"If I could get at that data it would be interesting to look at… You would be able to notice, hey I'm noticing I'm not getting as good of sleep anymore." - Patrick, 67

"If you can't sleep without it, which I can, but there's kind of consequences to that sleep quality. So it's kind of a necessity, inconveniences, but you also need to have it." - Elizabeth, 52

"I hate cleaning these things, there should be no square corners inside these things… I noticed this with my Dad's… he didn't get down into the sharp 90 degree angles, so he had pink mold growing inside his." - Cecilia, 59

Emerging Technology.

Headed by Liran Oren at the University of Cincinnati, the Vortex PAP utilizes airflow made of rotational vorticies. Compared to continuous airflow, vortex rings maintain structure & force further, eliminating the need for a tight seal.

POG: Market Aesthetics

Newer machines have a small footprint for nightstands and light travel. On the downside, most are medical and bulky in shape & size, making them an eyesore.

The design should feel natural and inviting to combat the typical "cumbersome" machines. It uses simple navigation to prevent errors, and clear, soft forms for functional transparency.

Ideation.

The CPAP design should look pleasing on a nightstand and overall calming. It is important that the form is rounded for cleaning and softening visual abrasiveness.

Features.

Nox has similar features to that of current CPAP machines, but uses a vortex fan. It has one main knob for control, reducing errors that are often attributed to touch screens. The water reservoir is fairly open with rounded corners for easy cleaning.
